Denotation and Connotation

The WaterAid advert communicates meaning to an audience through the use of a symbolic media code. The young child's facial expression shows no emotion which suggests he feels tired and that he has been going through this for a very long time/ seen a lot of things. The use of the word "graves" simply is where deceased people are buried in. Under the facade, it has connotations of extreme seriousness, solemnity, or impending danger and if no action is taken then the outcome will turn out injurious. The producer's message is for people to act urgently and help those who are not seen for them to have a chance in life like everyone else has.

The RSPCA advert communicates meaning to an audience through the use of a symbolic media code. Looking at the malnourished looking dogs body language, the dog's ears are tucked backwards showing a sign of submission, fear and anxiety. The use of the word "starved" implies that this dog was most likely neglected or abused and that it didn't get anything that a healthy dog would get/ be treated as. The producer's message is to seek attention for animals that are being neglected and treated unfairly and to report it or if you are unknowingly neglecting them then you should start treating them better.
